College Now Courses earn PPAS students college credits that can be used toward a CUNY transcript and in some cases can be transferred to other colleges. High School credits are not earned by completing a College Now course.
Eligibility:
- 11th and 12th grade students only
- Student must meet the CUNY College Readiness Benchmarks:
- For a math class or class with math prerequisite:
- 70 or better on New York State Regents Examinations in Algebra 1 or Geometry OR
- 65 or higher on Algebra 2 OR
- 530 or better on SAT math section OR
- ACT Math score of 21 or higher
- For all other classes:
- 75 or better on English Language Arts (ELA) Regents OR
- 480 or better on SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section OR
- ACT English score of 20 or higher
- For a math class or class with math prerequisite:
Times and Location:
- All classes are held on the John Jay campus
- Classes must not coincide with any PPAS academic or performing arts class
- Earliest available classes start at 4:00 PM
Courses Available
- Availability of courses change each semester
- Courses are posted in May for fall classes, and in December from spring classes.
Procedure: (currently Ms. Kelly is the counselor responsible for this process)
- College Now classes are announced at school and emails are sent home to alert families of the beginning of the registration process for interested students.
- Interested students consult with the Counseling or College office to review eligibility and discuss options.
- Parents receive and must sign a parent permission form to be returned to the Counseling Office.
- Counseling Office will complete the application with students once parents provide permission. Most students receive placement but it is not guaranteed.
Other Important Information:
- Cohort courses are offered only to high school 11th and 12th graders from participating NYC public schools.
- Waiver courses enroll both high school and college students.
- Students are NOT permitted to drop classes once they are enrolled.
